ABOUT US
The founder of our company, Amos Stoll, Sr., started his construction business in 1952. At first, Amos worked out of his home office in rural Daviess County.
The company was named Stoll Bros. Construction, and his projects were new homes along with some commercial jobs including banks and several church buildings. It was around 1970 that Amos used Schrock cabinets in one of the homes and the crew members were impressed with the quality, so he became a distributor for Schrock Kitchen Cabinets, manufactured in the Arthur, Illinois Amish & Mennonite community.
As the business grew, there was not enough storage space for the kitchen cabinets at the home place, so Amos rented a portion of a former lumberyard building in Odon, Indiana. Amos's two sons, Bill and Leroy unloaded Schrock trucks and loaded customers out of the lumberyard building, and soon people would stop by and ask, "Are you open, do you sell 2 x 4's and plywood"? One thing led to another and as Amos says, "We got into the lumber business by accident".
Amos Sr. passed away on August 1st, 2024 at age 91 and his wife Katherine died a few days later on August 10th at age 89. Both Amos and Katie lived next door to the business and Amos was still coming over mornings to sort the mail in early 2024. They both remained interested in work and would always ask, "Are you busy today?", when we stopped by the house. Certainly, they are missed.
The business was incorporated in 1978 as Stoll Bros. Lumber, Inc. Some of our employees have been with us for decades and the fourth generation of the Stoll family is working at our stores at the present time. The main lumberyard is just a few blocks away from where we started, and there is now a second location in Loogootee, Indiana. Our stores are full-service lumberyards with lumber, hardware, paint, doors & windows, lawn & garden, kitchen & bath, power tools, outdoor power equipment, plumbing, electrical, flooring and roofing departments.
